Garnet

C&S Brand® garnet filter gravel is a hard rock garnet and is mined from an almandite garnet deposit.  Colour is pinkish to red-brown and it has a high hardness, durability and abrasion resistance.  It is ideal for use as a filtration medium in granular media filters, including support gravel layers in multi-media systems.  C&S BRAND® garnet filter gravel provides uniform physical, chemical and microstructure characteristics.  There are no toxic elements.  All oxides are combined chemically as an iron-rich aluminosilicate, which has the formula: Fe3AlO3(SiO4)3.  C&S Brand garnet has a high specific gravity, which means it will stay in place during backwashing, retaining the integrity of the filter bed.
