Exploring the Uses of Granular Activated Carbon

What are Impregnated Activated Carbons?

Impregnated Activated Carbons (IACs) are specialised activated carbon products impregnated with chemical agents to enhance adsorption capabilities or catalyse chemical reactions. This tailored treatment makes them highly effective in removing specific contaminants, such as Mercury, Hydrogen Sulphide and other odorous Sulphur compounds, or Ammonia, and in applications requiring antimicrobial or oxidation properties.

Projects

Sydney Desalination
Plant

In response to declining water levels, Sydney Water obtained approval for a Seawater Desalination Plant. Pilot testing favoured coarse dual-media filtration. We supplied C & S Brand Australian Filter Coal, on time and to exact specification.

Qurayyat Desalination
Plant

This plant is in operation to address water shortages in Muscat, Oman and surrounds. We supplied 2,210 cubic metres of C & S Brand Australian Filter Coal, delivered on time, to exact specifications.

Dungog WTP

This was the first contact filtration plant in Australia to use large effective size media, after pilot plant work by the Hunter Water Corporation. It was also the first to use C & S Brand Australian Filter Coal and remains an industry frontrunner with long-term results, durability and consistency.

Barangaroo Lendlease
Grand Casino

We supplied premium C&S Brand Australian Activated Carbon while transforming a former gas works site into a modern casino and hotel, effectively eliminating odours and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and adding to Sydney’s evolving skyline.

Mt Crosby
Eastbank

This refurbishment project included converting 20 mono-media sand filters to dual-media filters with C&S Brand Australian Filter Coal. It extended filter run times, reduced backwashing frequency and improved plant performance, surpassing client expectations.

FAQs

How does Purazorb Activated Carbon perform in industrial water treatment applications?

Purazorb Activated Carbon excels in industrial water treatment due to its unique qualities. Our ability to customise particle sizing ensures an optimal balance between flow rate and contact time for your specific needs. This, combined with a high internal surface area, high iodine number and low ash content, makes Purazorb exceptionally efficient. Ultimately, Purazorb delivers consistent, high-performance filtration with minimal maintenance, making it a reliable choice for industries demanding pure water.

What is the typical lead time for Purazorb Australian Activated Carbon orders?

The typical lead time for Purazorb depends on the volume and specific requirements of the order. Please contact our support team for a detailed quote and transparent lead time estimate. For Domestic orders, we aim to be able to facilitate delivery within 2 weeks from date of Order, managing our stock levels adequately to service our customers. In the case of Algal taste and odour events, we can often have a truck dispatched within two days.

Does Purazorb Activated Carbon comply with industry standards or water treatment certifications?

Yes, Purazorb Australian Activated Carbon complies with several key industry standards. It has been comprehensively used by water authorities, councils and government organisations around Australia over decades of manufacturing. Additionally, Purazorb – Australian Activated Carbon is certified under NSF 61, ensuring its safety in drinking water applications, and ANSI/American Water Works Association Standard B604, which governs the use of Activated Carbon in potable water treatment. James Cumming & Sons is also an ISO accredited organisation for Quality, Environment and Safety practices ensuring that we keep optimising and innovating our systems and processes to ensure delivering our quality products on time and to exact customer specifications. Purazorb is also Halal & Kosher Certified and certified Australian Made product.

What is the difference between granular and powdered Purazorb, and how do I choose the right one for my needs?

Granular Purazorb Activated Carbon has coarser particles, making it ideal for contactors and fixed beds, providing longer-lasting filtration. This makes it ideal for continuous water treatment systems like municipal water plants and industrial filtration processes. Powdered Purazorb has a larger external surface area, offering quicker adsorption, allowing for greater surface area as a consumable dosed into treatment plants instead of being used as a granular filter media, making it more ideal for more ad-hoc applications or algal taste and odour events. Your choice should be based on your system’s flow rate, the available infrastructure/treatment trains and the specific contaminants you have the contact time to remove.

How long does Purazorb Activated Carbon last in industrial applications?

The lifespan of Purazorb Activated Carbon in industrial applications depends on specific conditions, such as the level of contaminants and flow rate. It lasts anywhere from several months to over 5 years before requiring replacement, particularly if used in BAC / Ozone applications. Our customers will perform regular monitoring of performance, including compound breakthrough, which will help determine the optimal time for replacement. Using the right size and type of Purazorb for your system also impacts its overall longevity. Depending on the raw water quality, we’ve had customers need to change it out every 4 years without biological activity, as they’ve continuously optimised their processes. Given our unique manufacturing process and raw material selection, you can be assured that it is a good quality, wholly Australian made, Activated Carbon solution.
