superior filtration performance

James Cumming & Sons is the sole manufacturer of Australian Filter coal (Anthracite type filter media),
Our coal is produced to particular customer sizing specifications, from a select premium coal seam in NSW with the right characteristics for water filtration media. With over a century of mineral processing and manufacturing, we’re the reliable partner to deliver for effective and dependable anthracite-type filter media for potable, tertiary wastewater, industrial and desalination pre-treatment applications.

Filter Coal in a bowl

Product description

C & S Brand Australian Filter Coal is an anthracite-type filter media with industry leading uniformity coefficient (UC), consisting of hard, durable cubic subangular particles, free of clay, shale and other impurities. Lower UCs allow for greater filter run times, ideal void spacing between interstitial particles within the filter bed creating more capacity for floc and therefore longer life of the filter and improved flow rates allowing for less backwashing and more filtration time from your treatment plant.

Manufactured in our Western Sydney processing plant through a dry process with consistent particle sizing, it is clean, with minimal fines, resulting in lower scraping losses during filter installation and significant cost savings.

Our anthracite-type filter coal ensures long-term performance, outperforming softer or chemically unstable alternatives. Upgrading from a mono-media sand filter to a dual-media filter with Australian Filter Coal achieves a 50-100% increase in water filtration efficiency and a significant reduction in backwash rates.

Australian Filter Coal or Anthracite

At James Cumming & Sons, we’ve identified an Australian bituminous coal that outperforms imported anthracite coal, meeting or even exceeding the AWWA B100 standard, except for the fixed carbon content.

The two key factors for filtering suitability are coal hardness and acid solubility. Our extensively tested Australian Filter Coal, with a proven track record in thousands of treatment plants, is a superior choice for potable, wastewater or pre-treatment desalination. Anthracite coal by classification or rank is not essential for proven durability and filtration performance. Attrition losses through a filter have been proven at 0.25% maximum per annum on 100 hour backwash tests through independent water authorities and laboratories testing.

Projects

Sydney Desalination
Plant

In response to declining water levels, Sydney Water obtained approval for a Seawater Desalination Plant. Pilot testing favoured coarse dual-media filtration. We supplied C & S Brand Australian Filter Coal, on time and to exact specification.

Qurayyat Desalination
Plant

This plant is in operation to address water shortages in Muscat, Oman and surrounds. We supplied 2,210 cubic metres of C & S Brand Australian Filter Coal, delivered on time, to exact specifications.

Dungog WTP

This was the first contact filtration plant in Australia to use large effective size media, after pilot plant work by the Hunter Water Corporation. It was also the first to use C & S Brand Australian Filter Coal and remains an industry frontrunner with long-term results, durability and consistency.

Barangaroo Lendlease
Grand Casino

We supplied premium C&S Brand Australian Activated Carbon while transforming a former gas works site into a modern casino and hotel, effectively eliminating odours and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and adding to Sydney’s evolving skyline.

Mt Crosby
Eastbank

This refurbishment project included converting 20 mono-media sand filters to dual-media filters with C&S Brand Australian Filter Coal. It extended filter run times, reduced backwashing frequency and improved plant performance, surpassing client expectations.

FAQs

What are the advantages of Australian Filter Coal over Anthracite Media Manufacturers?

– Industry leading Uniformity Coefficients – Creating superior void spaces and porosity within a filter bed, leading to longer filter run times and higher filtration rates
– High Hardness & Durability – HGI < 50 - Low specific Gravity - 1.45 - Competitive Pricing for Australian and Export Projects - Quick Availability and lead times - Robust and Safe Packaging - Technical Service & Experience, responsive staff

what is the difference between Anthracite and Filter Coal?

Anthracite is a classification of Coal. Filter Coal is our Australian Made product that is bituminous coal based that aims to supply the Water Filtration market with a superior alternative to Anthracite by rank. Not all coals were created equal. We source a particular seam of Australian Coal for washing, drying, crushing, screening to effective size and uniformity coefficient for the water industry. The necessity came from the early 80s when Australian water authorities started upgrading plants to dual-media configurations due to rising water quality concerns and needing to get greater filtration rates from their treatment plants. Since there are no available anthracite seams in Australia’ geology, James Cummings’ Managing Director, John Cumming, identified a suitably hard, chemically stable and light coal, suitable for water filtration and had it rigorously tested in bench and pilot scale before supplying water filtration plants, now across the country.

Can you provide detailed specifications and technical data sheets for your Australian Filter Coal?

Yes. We understand the importance of having detailed information for informed decision-making. Please reach out to us with your requirements, and we’ll be happy to provide you with comprehensive data sheets for our Australian Filter coal. Our team can discuss your delivery needs in detail.

What are the advantages of using bituminous coal based filter media over anthracite filter media?

While anthracite is often considered a higher grade of coal due to its higher fixed carbon content, our experience across thousands of projects delivering potable water, wastewater and desalination applications has consistently demonstrated the distinct advantages of our select bituminous based coal.

Our Australian Filter Coal has a lower fixed carbon content than Anthracite Coal. However, this is proven to not affect filtration ability. Our Australian Filter coal superior hardness also contributes to greater resistance to abrasion and breakdown, ultimately prolonging the lifespan of the operating filter. Choosing bituminous coal can also be a more cost-effective solution, given the relative scarcity and higher cost of imported anthracite.

What is the typical lead time for Australian Filter Coal orders?

Lead times for Australian Filter Coal orders vary depending on factors such as order size, specific product requirements, current stock levels and your location. However, we strive to fulfil orders as quickly as possible. We can provide you with a precise delivery timeframe upon request. We manage the delivery process along the way, from formal quotation to confirmation of order and prompt shipment. We typically aim to keep 100m3 of each standard sizing grade in stock to ensure our customers’ orders are fulfilled promptly. With this in mind, typically we can deliver or despatch within a couple weeks of order placement.
